Personalized & Play-Based Speech Therapy
Our Approach
At Northern Star Therapy, we believe in hands-on learning, which often means moving, exploring, and even getting a little messy as we connect with your child through meaningful activities. Our sessions incorporate sensory play, music, obstacle courses, books, and games to make therapy both enjoyable and effective!
We also value the vital role that parents play in their child’s progress. That’s why we encourage parent involvement during sessions—whether it’s hands-on participation, observation, or completing practice activities at home.
Speech & Language Evaluations
Evaluations
In order to tailor our therapy sessions to your child’s needs, our first step will be an evaluation. This allows us to identify your child’s unique communication strengths and challenges so that we can create a plan to help.
Evaluations look different for every child. We will start by assessing any speech and language skills that you may be concerned about and gather additional information as needed. You and your child can expect to participate in a mix of interviews, play-based observations, and formal and informal tests that may last 1 to 1.5 hours.
Speech & Language Therapy
Speech Sounds, Language Comprehension, & Expressive Language Skills
We will work toward your child’s goals by embedding evidence-based strategies into activities that they enjoy. Our sessions often include engaging games, sensory-motor play, free play, books, obstacle courses, and music to keep your child engaged and motivated to learn. Speech therapy will help your child:
Speak clearly with age-appropriate speech sounds
Understand what they hear or read
Express their wants, needs, thoughts, knowledge, and feelings using words
Ask, answer, comment, and converse in a more effective way
We encourage all forms of communication in our sessions, including gestures, signs, pictures, words, and/or AAC!
